The Road was the kind of place where you could go anywhere and nowhere all at once, depending on what goal you had in mind. You could live your whole life traveling it, and it was certain there would still be parts you'd never lay eyes on. Loclaran swore there was no wonder of the world the Road could not take you to, and for the most part, many of the troupe agreed.

The long winding road led everywhere a troupe like the Loclaran Troupe of Performance Entertainers Extraordinaire could possibly want. It was exciting, it was comforting, it was … home.

Although he and Xander had only been with the Loclaran Troupe's caravan for a few years, they were already starting to feel it. The ageless feeling of the road seeped into their bones and made them feel welcome, the Cities they entered were just to make money and entertain, the real living was done while they caravanned the distance between performances.

Even between performances, life in the Caravan was pretty exciting. Today was a Rest day for the Troupe, they were halfway between performances and Loclaran had ordered the group to pull off the road and make camp. The wagons were parked in a circle about the cook fires, and small groups gathered to sing, dance and entertain each other while they practiced.

For Xander and Alexis, this meant a wide circle. No one wanted to get in the way of a blade master's weapon by purpose or by accident, whether one was blind or not.

The twins had shucked their cloaks after making camp, their thick, identical blue hair braided up and away from their faces, shirts piled on top of their cloaks. They faced off against each other in the sunlight, laughing and chatting with those around them as they circled, occasionally throwing a rude taunt at the other.

((I hope this is okay.))

It was the sound of revelry that drew Taern from his inconspicuous location within the weald and towards the circle of singing and dancing not too far from where he'd made camp. Usually, he would have ignored the interlopers in hopes that they would remain unawares of his presence for, as experience had taught him, the only kind that ventured along these routes were poachers, slavers, highwaymen and bandits. It was always within his best interests to avoid them whenever he could, but Taern was not afraid of their ilk. On the contrary. He found their efforts to pursue, and hopefully overpower, him to be quite humorous... at first. Now, it had become an increasing annoyance.

Although Taern was ignorant to the habits and 'codes-of-honour' among such men, he wasn't a fool. He knew they were aware of his continued assistance to hapless travellers or merchants unfortunate enough to meet upon a band of roving thieves, and his constant interference threatened their lucrative 'line-of-work'. To be fair, they were here first and he was the one imposing on their territory, and in his frank opinion, anyone stupid enough to risk the shorter, but more dangerous route, deserved whatever causality they came across. And Taern would only be more than willing to leave the fools to their dire fate... as long as children were not involved.

This was the primary reason the Demon had not progressed from the forested area. He believed this was a divine purpose, that Alma wanted him to serve her here. But he was making quite a number of enemies, among slavers especially, and his encounters with those miscreants grew increasingly as the months passed. They were hunting him, and sending more teams after each failed assassination attempt, which only led him to wonder just how bad things were after the war that so many would turn to such a degenerate lifestyle.

Taern wouldn't call himself a seasoned warrior, even though fighting was what he was created to do, but these pillagers were just so bad at it that they posed no challenge to him whatsoever. Again, they were nothing more than a major inconvenience.

Confident that the revelers were just a merry band of travellers, he curiously approached to watch their antics. As expected, there was nary a form of entertainment to be had this far from civilization, save from the rutting of animals in heat, and Taern was starved for any form of leisurely distraction. However, he was carefully hesitant to let his presence be known, uncertain how they would react to his... abnormality. For the moment, he was content just to watch and occasionally laugh.

Shamelessly exploiting the fact they didn’t have to travel today, Fugue sat at the most inner part of the circle of spectators just watching the Blade Master brothers and doing nothing else. He cheered and yelled in tune with the others gathered around, encouraging first one brother and then the other. Some of the troupe favoured one brother over the other, but to Fugue they both had their own charm. The little boy in his lap did have a definite favourite though and he wriggled around, waving a wooden sword around while he cheered for Xander. “Cuz, he’s BLIND, y’know?” Shun had blurted out.

The boy’s mother sat a little ways off, using the opportunity of a break from travelling and her energetic little child to fix some clothes with needle and thread. She smiled at him gratefully and continued her work, sewing a patch of red fabric over a hole in what seemed to be one of Shun’s tunics, while she chatted with an elderly woman from another family. Fugue’s attention was momentarily distracted by trying to figure out the subject of their conversation, but a shove in the ribs by Shun made him snap to it with an audible “Oomph!”

“What’s a wanker?” Shun asked, copying the word without knowing its meaning. He prodded his wooden sword into the grass next to the musen’s thigh. “Hey Fugue, what’s a wanker? Are you a wanker?”

The demon paled away at so much profanity falling from the child’s lips. “Heavens no!” He shook his head, the blue bandana that kept his hair from his face brushing over his shoulders. “You’d better forget that word right now, Shun. Don’t let your mother hear it.”

The boy petulantly pouted at Fugue. “But what IS it?” he demanded to know, prodding the ground harsher with his toy sword, as if irritated. An irritation that only grew when the crowd around them cheered at a particular impressive move one of the brothers made and Shun had missed it. He was on his feet before Fugue could move and ran towards Alexis, pumping his little first with the wooden sword in it high up in the air. “Do it again, do it AGAIN!”

“Shun!” Fugue called, following not far behind, “Get back here, it’s dangerous out there!”

Nariko sat quietly in front of one the fires, her cloak wrapped tightly around herself. Her mind was tentatively reaching out to the people around her, trying to find anything that might tell her more about them without alerting them of her probing. She still wasn't quite sure if she could trust them, but they had been kind enough to let her join them for the time being so they couldn't be that bad right?
Still she felt a lil uneasy around so many people. She'd been living a secluded life up until now, only interacting with people when she really needed something. And now she suddenly found herself around a whole bunch of people she did not know.
But if this was what she had to do to find him, then she would endure it.

In the three days she had been with the troupe she had not dared intrude on the minds of any of them. She hadn't told them what she was and was afraid that if they found out, they might ask her to leave.. or worse hurt her. But today being a rest day she didn't not have much else to do but sit there. And thus her mind had started to wander.

The sounds of a fight however interrupted her search and she cast her mind out towards the source of the noise, only to find the two blade masters of the group fighting one another.
“Don't worry dear, they do this all the time.” a voice came from next to her. The woman had obviously seen her alarmed expression. She silently cursed herself for letting herself show any emotion to these people. If they suspected her fear they might take advantage of it. Nariko forced herself to smile at the woman and nodded in reply.

(Gah, slow start for me lol)

Someone nudged him. Human, a man, big guy. Caden opened his eyes to see who it was, but quickly closed them again at the rays of sunlight. He sighed and blindly reached for his flask. Ah, it's still there. He took a swig, letting the rich and potent liquor run over his tongue. Beside him he heard someone chuckle, but he ignored it.

Now, he would try again. He opened his eyes, but this time to just slits. He squinted and turned his head. Two men stared down at him. His mind sputtered out their names. Marco and Andre. Men from the caravan. They took bets on him and Karik's drinking contest last night. He stared at them for a while, trying to figure out what they could want. Nothing of importance came to mind so he simply closed his eyes again and turned over.

"Get up, you git." Someone shoved him in his shoulder.

Caden grunted and swatted the hand away. "It's too early."

"It's bloody mid-afternoon," Marco exclaimed.

Andre chuckled. "Marco's just sore because you're alive. He bet me you would die from alcohol poisoning."

Caden turned over and squinted at the two men. "You were betting on whether I was alive?"

Andre nodded, an unrepentant grin on his face. "I won."

Caden nodded. "Congratulations." He sat up. His eyes adjusted to the light. "So was that your only reason for waking me?"

"No, there's a wagon the boss wants you to check out. We think the wheels going," Marco said.

Caden nodded and slid out of the back of the wagon he had fallen asleep in last night. He ran a hand through his hair, tousling it even more. His clothes were crumpled, but he didn't mind. He yawned and waved his hand. "Lead on, good sir."

Marco shook his head. "The way you talk sound more like a performer than a tinker."

Caden shrugged. "We tinkers are a cultured bunch."

Marco led the way, while Andre walked off. Obviously he had only been there to collect on his bet with Marco. As they went, Caden walked past the group of people surrounding the two blade masters. He paused a moment to watch them. The fluidity of their movements never ceased to amaze him, especially the blind one. He hoped that he might get a chance to talk to Xander before he had to leave the caravan. He had encounter blade masters before, but never a blind one.

As he paused, he took in the camp. His attention drifting over the woman who had joinned the camp some days ago, before catching sight of a figure that was a bit away, obviously stepping out of the woods. He raised his eyebrow at the sight, but his thoughts were interrupted when he saw a child running by and straight into the path of the blade masters. Without thinking he scooped the child up and placed him on his shoulder.

"Well now, careful there. You wouldn't want a sword in your stomach or some other inconvenient place, would you?"

He turned to see a man with a blue bandana running towards them. He had seen him before, but there was such a variety of people around he hadn't had a chance to properly be introduced, though he knew his name and that he often spent time around the children.

"Ah, Fugue, did you lose something?"

Alexis had been in the midst of taking Xander to task for calling him a wanker where children could hear (and repeat) his words, taking his weapon and slamming it into his twin's blade, when he noticed the child rushing towards them. Immediately he stopped, his brother taking advantage of the movement and sweeping a leg beneath the other, ensuring Alexis landed on his ass in the grass.

Xander plopped on top of his twin, eliciting a grunt from Alex as the air forcibly left his gut. Xander sent a serene smile in the direction of the child, his blade settling across his knees. He heard the other man- the tinker, Caden- as he swept Shun up, speaking to the singer who had been watching the boy. "Best keep him closer at hand." He grinned, "Shun's quite the handful. Thank-you for grabbing him tinker." He said, letting out a surprised grunt as Alexis wrapped his arms around Xander's waist and managed to twist, throwing them both to the ground, the sword falling harmlessly to the grass next to them. They lay there for a moment and laughed.

Finally Alexis shoved himself to his feet, turning around and giving Xander a hand up, Xander had stuck a hand up expectantly and had been waiting for Lexi to do just that. Xander leaned down and grabbed his blade, sheathing it as the crowd about them began to shift to the side, circling another group of performers as they began training, acrobats this time.

Letting out a breath of relief when the Blade Masters seemed to pick up his call and stopped fighting immediately, Fugue slowed his pace when Caden scooped up the child and set him on his shoulder. He rubbed his temple, wholeheartedly agreeing with Xander: Shun was indeed a handful. “You shouldn’t run off like that, Shun,” he warned the boy, who stubbornly swung his sword around much like he had seen the brothers do earlier, relying on Caden to not drop him. He stuck out his tongue at Fugue. “You can’t tell me what to do. You’re not my father.”

The remark stung. Fugue could have been Shun’s father, if this had gone differently. But he just grinned and cocked his head, lavender eyes decorated with red markings narrowing mischievously. “Oh, you’re right. I’m just your babysitter. But I’m very good friends with Caden here and I could ask him to keep you up there until you are at least forty years old. Ooh, imagine the drama when you will start dating girls: you’d have to bring that guy with you everywhere.”

Shun’s nose scrunched up at the suggestion. “Ew! Girls!” He wriggled around and sputtered, his tiny hand pulling on a few locks of Caden’s hair to put him down. When he was down on the ground again, the boy stuck out his tongue to the both of them and called, “The only girl I’m gonna marry is my mama!”, before he ran to her.

“Thanks Caden.” Fugue looked after Shun, until he was completely certain he wouldn’t get into any more trouble. “I was careless.”

He had only been with the caravan for four months, but he had taken it upon himself to know the name and face of every member. Even the girl who had joined them only three days ago and was sitting at one of the cooking fires had not escaped his attention: Nariko. He had been meaning to chat with her since she had joined, but she had always looked so scared that Fugue was waiting for a better opportunity to approach her.

Turning to the tinker, the musen could feel a grin coming up, remembering the night before. “Oya, congrats on winning that drinking contest last night.” Fugue had sat through the whole contest, not drinking himself but enjoying the laughs and merriment that came with vast quantities of alcohol. He’d even allowed himself to be talked into making a wager by some others, something they were probably regretting right about now. Fugue’s coin pouch hung heavy from his waist. “I hadn’t expected you up and about until twilight! You must have amazing resistance for alcohol.”

His attention was drawn primarily towards the two combatants, sparring with great aptitude in swordsmanship. Although they fought with a friendly rivalry and consummate skill, the genetic similarities they shared hinted that they were consanguineous and were of no fatal threat to one another. In fact, they appeared to be having fun in their little romp.

While he was impressed by their adept handling of the sword, a weapon he experienced much difficulty in weilding himself, Taern did not drop his guard enough that he forgot the others in his surroundings. His deep brown eyes occasionally swept across those gathered around the camp to be sure no one had spotted him. Most of the travellers were of no consequence to him but there were a few that he didn't feel comfortable with. Not that they would seek harm upon his person, mind you, but there was something... more to their simple appearance. He could sense it.

There were the fighting relatives he was presently observing. Should they decide he posed some sort of threat he knew he would never be able to take them on in close range. There was a lone girl, sitting silent and forlorn beside a fire, cocooned within her traveller's cloak. She seemed harmless enough to the naked eye, as if she carried some heavy burden or was laden by a troubled past, and her robes, drawn so closely against her lean frame, were the only means she had of protecting herself. But still, there was something about her Taern didn't trust even though he couldn't put his finger on it.

Then there was the child and his guardian and, Taern had to admit, he was unable to keep his eyes off the young boy while he played with his wooden sword. The painted face of his watcher scowled as they shared a stern conversation and he imagined things were said that he didn't approve of. But, kids were like that, Alma bless them, he chuckled inwardly.

They were also known to run off into unsafe situations, which was what the little one was doing right that moment! Taern ground his teeth as the child rushed towards the fray and he knew the fair guardian wouldn't reach him in time. He couldn't let the child come into harm's way but he didn't dare risk revealing himself to these people. Every tendon within his body drew tight and, when the boy came too close for comfort, he sprung into action, leaving the sanctity of his hiding place to race towards the child. Only to be beaten by another male who was fortunate enough to have been in passing and grabbed the boy in time.

Taern swore inwardly, feeling exposed and at a disadvantage. His fingertips reflexively went to the hilt of his sword but he did not draw it. The child was safe, there was really no reason for him to stay and he wondered why he didn't just leave, but his feet were rooted in place as if he were intimidated by the strangers around him. His face showed no hint of such anxiety, however, and he looked towards the man that had supposedly been responsible for keeping an eye on the child. "You should really be more conscientious when children are involved," Taern lectured him in a clipped tone.

Caden winced when the child tugged at his hair and knocked him with his wooden sword. He was quite happy to set the child down. Though he liked children, he always felt a sort of awkwardness around them, which meant he could only handle them in small doses and tended to say the wrong thing around them. Still, they had their charm, and he couldn't help a chuckle at the boy's declaration.

"Well, I suppose there have been a great many heroes that had felt the same about their mother," he said and then turned towards Fugue. "Since you are saying congratulations to me I suppose that you were on the winning side. So congratulations on a bet well made."

He patted his purse. I'll have to see about collecting my own winnings as well. As to not being up until twilight that was indeed my goal as well. Unfortunately, Marco and Andre decided to bet on whether I died from alcohol poisoning or not. I'm glad to say I did not."

He patted Fugue's shoulder. "I would need more potent alcohol than that to truly knock me down. Please, if you find any let me know."

The touch on Fugue's shoulder sent a jolt of information into his mind. His brain rapidly went over it. His eyes had a sort of dazed look to them for a moment. First the touch gaze him information about the shirt, the type of material, its density, and size. Then it went further. Male, fifty-three, demon race, Muzen, rare.

A man came up to them and began scolding him, giving Caden the necessary interruption to pull himself out of his mind's interworking. He slid his hand away from Fugue, his eyes returning into focus. "Ah or maybe that alcohol was a bit more potent than I thought."

He looked at the stranger. Not someone from the caravan, unless he had joined them during last's night revelry or while Caden had been sleeping the day away. Giving the man a curious look, he thought to leave Fugue to his scolding, but since this was a stranger, he didn't. He had the unfortunate circumstances of having developed a conscience and so if anything happened to Fugue, because he left him with some irate stranger, he would have felt guilty.

"Well, sir, if you're going to scold my deeply beloved friend, Fugue, it is only proper that you introduce yourself first."

Fugue was caught off guard by the words of the dark-haired stranger that had appeared to take concern in Shun’s wellbeing. His cheeks flushed a bright red in shame, the colour almost matching the markings under his eyes. He didn’t bother with excuses, because he knew he had been in the wrong and he was more than a little surprised when Caden spoke up in his defence, calling him a ‘deeply beloved friend’. To Fugue, all people were considered friends and he hardly knew anything other about Caden but the fact he seemed to love to drink and the fact he always wore a necklace with particular charms, no matter the weather or situation. So he hadn’t expected Caden to consider him a friend, as well.

He frowned a little. He could be mistaken, of course. From the four months he had been around Loclaren’s group he had also learned that Caden was prone to jump in and help if the situation called for it. This could be just such a situation. Looking a little dishevelled, the muzen returned his kindness by placing a light hand on Caden’s arm and step a little closer to Taern. “It’s fine, Caden. He is right, you know. I should have been more watchful.”

Bowing his head in apology, though it would do him little good, Fugue regarded Taern with a suppressed kind of excited curiosity. This man was not from the group and Fugue wondered what had drawn him to their campgrounds. Was it the spectacular play-fight Alexis and Xander had put on display? Or did he come from the same town as Noriko and followed them out here? He didn’t have a lot of time to give it much thought, as Shun came barrelling back towards them, also drawn by he presence of a new person.

The boy’s eyes were large, his grin impressed as he looked at Tearn. He knew no fear as he pulled on the man’s clothes, giggling and asking in an excited tone: “Hey hey! Are you a wanker?”

Fugue looked utterly horrified.

"Erm," Taern stammered when addressed by the young man who smelled faintly of alcohol. He was right. Although it had been prudent to point out that his child rearing skills were severely lacking, refusing to introduce himself to the group was not only rude but stupid, since they outnumbered him considerably. Taern gave Fugue an apologetic bow before identifying himself to the group. "Please, forgive my abruptness. My name is Taern, I am a traveller and a-" and remembering that there was a child nearby, he amended mercenary with, " 'man-for-hire'."

He was uncertain whether they needed to know that bit of information or not but, given the circumstances, he surmised it was best he be honest with them from the inception to avoid later misunderstandings. The man called Caden shared a moment of kinship with the other named Fugue and, just as Taern was about to agree with him about being a substandard caretaker, the little boy in question ran over to the group and started pulling on his pants leg.

Taern beamed down at the child, not at all put off by his forward behaviour and he got down on one knee to tenderly brush his hair with a large hand. Now, Taern had spent his fair share of time with all manner of people in his exile, and in his travels he'd witnessed the boisterous antics of drunkards and sailors alike. But, he'd never come across that particular word before and, while he didn't believe children were capable of profanity, 'wanker' didn't exactly sound like a term of endearment.

"I am not certain," his brows furrowed in confusion. Ah, but how could he disappoint such excited innocence. "Perhaps... I suppose that could be so. What exactly does a wanker do?"

"A WANKER, " Xander said as he scooped Shun up from behind and plopped the kid on his hip, "Is not someone you typically see in polite society, nor is it something we call anyone but Lexi, got that sprout?" He leaned down and muttered softly, "Especially not in front of your mother okay?"

He grinned briefly, his blindfolded face quickly turning serious however as he directed his words towards Tearn and Caden , "Strong words for Fugue, but none for the child?"

He gave the child a stern frown, setting the boy down and kneeling next to him as Xander held his arms firmly, "You know better, do NOT interfere with performers or you can get hurt, if you do it again, you'll not be allowed to watch anymore."

The voice of a stranger brought Nariko back to reality. Apparently the little boy had been acting foolish again. But why did a stranger suddenly appear just to scold the muzen who was always watching over the child? Now that she thought back on it, she had felt the presence of a rather strange mind close by their camp. But until now she had not paid it much attention.
As she reached out her mind to the stranger she hesitated, there was something odd about this man. She didn't dare delve too deep into his mind. Something about him told he'd surely discover what she was.

And then there was Caden. He always seemed to be present when something was going on. That is if he wasn't passed out drunk. His mind however was impenetrable. Though for some reason this did not alarm her like it usually did. She felt she could possibly even trust this man.

Feeling like no one was likely to notice her due to the disturbance, Nariko let her mind enter the little boy so she could see through his eyes, something she'd been doing a lot since joining the troupe, feeling a little boy like Shun was the least likely to notice it. The fighting had stopped and everyone seemed gathered around Shun and the stranger who had introduced himself as Tearn. Besides being very tall he didn't look too out of the ordinary. But she did notice the strange silver pendant around his neck. She had seen it somewhere before, but couldn't quite remember where.

She pulled the hood of her cloak over her head and pretended to sleep, though her mind stayed within Shun's, content to watch the happenings through his eyes.

Alexis watched his twin from afar as he went to talk to Shun, inwardly he nodded firmly, knowing that someone had to talk to the child. Better Xander, who had a way with children, than Alexis. He moved over to one of the cook fires and grinned at the older granny there, giving her a sweet look as she doled out a bowl of meat stew and porridge, and two sticky buns. He nodded to her, thanking her and moved away to another fire, plopping down on the grass next to a group of particularly quiet folks and greeting them all with a raise of his hand.

"Did you lose again Alex?" A young woman asked, grinning over at him from where she sat with her beau. Her name was Greta, he remembered, and she had a terribly jealous sweetheart, if the look on his face was any indication.

"I never lose," Alex grinned, tactfully playing the part of a big brother, "It was a tie, fair and square, and just for that I'll not share my extra sweet with you." He winked at the girl and stood dramatically, bowing to an ancient granny walking past them, smoothly slipping a hand around her wrist, pressing the treat into her hand, "You may have it my sweet." He offered it to her with a charming grin before he pulled away, "May it brighten up your day."

She cackled and rapped his knuckles, shaking her head as she (and the sticky bun) shuffled off.

Alex laughed and settled back against his elbows, cocking a knee and facing the fire as he ate his dinner.

Caden stared at the man for a moment and then started laughing. He clutched at his stomach as the laughter kept coming out. Tears came to his eyes before he finally managed to get ahold of himself. "Oh, that's priceless. I haven't laughed that hard since I saw Bailey."

He wiped at his eyes and grinned when Xander came up to them. "Yes, it shouldn't be used in polite company or in front of children." He grinned. "You'll have to have a drink with me one time Taren and I'll explain in detail what a wanker is and you can determine if you are one or not."

He glanced over at Marco who was obviously growing irritated with the wait. As he did, his attention was caught and he turned back to glance at the girl the caravan had picked up three days ago. She looked like she was sleeping, but something itched at his scalp just for a moment.

"Hmmm."

Briefly he noticed Alexis walking by the woman before he turned back to the small gathering.

"Well now that we have Prince Xander here to protect the ever lovely Prince Fugue from the dark and mysterious Taren, I think the poor drunkard will be off to fix a wheel." He gave them a small bow, before shuffling off with Marco to the wagon the boss wanted him to check out.
