Nariko looked up from her bowl of food when she was suddenly addressed as the new girl.
“Stories? Me? Uhm...not really.” She knew even without seeing that everyone was staring at her and felt very uncomfortable being the center of attention suddenly.
“Oh come on, you gotta give us something,” someone begged.
She shook her head. “I'm sorry, but my life hasn't really been all that interesting. Why do you think I joined a group of performers?” she said jokingly.
And it was true for the most part. Up until the “incident” that had left her blind, she had lived a rather uneventful life. The only interesting things she could tell stories about were the dreams she witnessed. And she couldn't quite talk about that without revealing what she was. Besides, she thought that sharing those stories would be an invasion of the dreamer's privacy. Some things were just too personal.
But apparently the people around her didn't give up so easily.
“Then tell us something more about yourself, we hardly know you. Like how you came to be blind for instance. Or were you born blind?”
She sighed, things were getting way too personal here. So far for keeping to herself.
“The story of how I came to be blind is not something I care to talk about,” Nariko said. “Especially not in front of young children,” she added almost a whispering.
That seemed to shut people up though and she continued eating her food.

When she was sure people weren't staring at her anymore, she decided to borrow Shun's eyes once more to check out yet another newcomer. It was getting rather crowded and she felt less and less at ease. Too many people with magical powers. One was sure to find out she was no ordinary human loner.
She looked at the man that had introduced himself as Alexander. Another handsome fellow. Definitely no ordinary human though. She withdrew from Shun and extended her mind out to Alexander's. Peace keeper. Great, just what I need. Another nosy person.
She sighed again and went back to eating her food.

(Sorry for the late reply. I had no inspiration whatsoever Sad )

Tearn chuckled heartily at the playful ribbing Fugue gave to Esmeralda regarding her husband. He was sure that although the woman did find him comely that she was still very loyal to her mate, the Demon only hoped that David found it humorous as well and was not the overly jealous sort. To be forbidden anywhere near Shun and his family was the last thing Taern wanted, especially now that he was getting so close to the child.

He was all ears as the boy went into great detail about the exciting things he'd witnessed today, namely the friendly spar between, whom Taern soon learned, were twin brothers. "I want to be a fighter like Lexi when I grow up," he said proudly, then, after a second thought he amended; "or like Xander. He can't see, you know, but he's just as good with a sword as 'Lexi. I want to be blind so I can be as cool as Xander... but he told me that it's really challenging to learn to adapt with no sight. He's been blind since birth so it wasn't so difficult for him since he's been doing it all his life. But I think I'd be sad if I could never see my mom or my dad ever again... or Fugue... or Caden, or Gran Gran..."

Shun counted off everyone dearest to him on his fingers and it was quite an extensive list because he soon ran out of fingers. Taern generously offered the use of his but they still weren't enough and both men giggled, holding up 'twenty' and Shun continued his list but was forced to reuse fingers.

At person number twenty-four, Shun did something strange. Well, he shouldn't say strange. Shun was only a child and had not matured past his curious nature but it was peculiar behaviour, none-the-less. As he continued to name people whose faces he would miss should he ever lose his sight, his heard turned slightly and his gaze shifted to a group of men where a newcomer had introduced himself to the camp. Shun's attentions were still engrossed with their fingers and he'd glanced no more than fifteen degrees to his left, but because they were sitting so close together the Demon couldn't miss it.

The eerie moment lasted but a heartbeat and Shun's glittering eyes were back on the larger pair of hands before him. Taern frowned slightly and watched his playmate work on his list as nothing out of the ordinary had just transpired. If he recalled correctly, this wasn't the first occurrence within the short space of time that he'd known him where something like this had happened. It was starting to bother him.

Fugue returned and the delicious aromas of sweet breads and boiled meats caught their attention. Shun took his bowl with impatient hands but remembered his manners and waited for everyone to be seated and served before digging in.

Taern accepted his dish graciously. He had been in these woods for so long that he couldn't remember the last time he'd had a hot meal. "So," the Demon addressed the shorter man sitting next to him in an attempt to start a conversation. "I hear from a little bird on my shoulder that you're quite the culinary expert."

Shun looked up from his bowl to Taern's broad shoulders for such a bird.

Now that Lochlan had the new arrival in tow, Caden could concentrate on the wheel once more. His hands had been itching to build, create, fix, and he knew that sometimes even drink couldn't keep his magic at bay if he held back for too long. Holding back can cause accidents and when Caden truly let that happened, well, he didn't like to think of the last time that happened. All those people...

He pushed the thoughts in the back of his mind and moved crouched by the wagon. Marco was gone, probably hunting for that girl he was always with. Suzie. Hmmm, maybe the bear was right. When was the last time he had taken someone to his bed? The problem is that he only slept with people who didn't get attached. He moved too much, had too many secrets, and was involved in too many dangerous activities to allow himself (or anyone else) to get attached without good reason. It was simply better this way.

He slid his hand over the wheel and concentrated. His senses once again grew intense. Everything became even more real, more present throughout him, and then he concentrated on the wheel. It was easy. All e had to do was make it grow. The wood remember that it had once been a tree, had been alive, and even know it was alive, but in a different form.

Small branches began to thread through the crack and Caden directed them, interweaving them together so that not only did the crack close, but the wheel was stronger than it had been before. He brushed his hand over the fixed crack, changing the surface and back so that it was the normal grain of cut wood that was apparent, instead of the twisting roots of a tree.

"There. Much better." He stood up, pleased and feeling a surge of adrenaline coursing through his body. For a moment he let himself enjoy the feeling, before he took a drink from his flask, dulling the feeling.

"Well now." He looked around the caravan. He would be sorry to go, but he would probably have to leave soon. "Tomorrow."

Hopefully, one more day wouldn't hurt.

Fugue waved away the compliment with a grin. “One learns how to be creative when on the road and subjected to a strict diet of fruits and vegetables,” Fugue winked. He held up an arm to show off his not-so-impressive muscle structure. “Gotta stay in shape if I want to roll with the big guys of the troupe.”

He pointed at Loclaren, sporting a bright grin as he munched on a bite of bread. “He’s the best musician and a great troupe daddy.” Shun nodded fervently, to confirm this fact. Fugue’s finger changed direction to point at Caden. “He’s the best drinker and can fix anything.” Again, Shun nodded wholeheartedly, quickly chewing and swallowing his food to make a positive sound and make sure Taern would believe him. Chuckling under his breath, Fugue let his attention wander to Alex, jotting a finger in his direction as well. “The twins are the best fighters and take good care of the horses. Esmeralda is our best tanner and seamstress, David tells the best stories and the musical trio over there-” He pointed at three women enjoying their meal and talking in an animated fashion. One of them noticed him looking and blew them a kiss. “-can play any instrument you’d ask them to. Upside down.”

“Nami is awesome,” Shun agreed, wriggling around in Taern’s lap so he could reach for the sticky bun he had balanced on the man’s knee. “She even composed a song especially for me.” With his bread in one hand and his stew in the other, the boy excitedly started to sing the song one of the three sisters had made for him. It was about the sun and the moon and a little boy collecting stars and had an easy to follow, catchy tune. Even if Shun sang a little out of tune. Fugue smiled and couldn’t sit still as the boy abrasively sang the delicate tune, swaying from one side to the other. Shun didn’t get all of the words right, but stubbornly continued his singing until he would reach the end, Fugue softly humming with the boy to support him through the parts he didn’t know anymore.

From around one of the wagons, a young girl and her sister came running towards them. They were clapping their hands in time with the song, sporting big smiles and glittering eyes to see if Shun had finished eating yet so they could play. They fell on their knees next to Taern, looking up to the man with awe.

Shun paused a second to look at them. “You sing, too.”

The youngest girl shook her head. “I dunno the words,” she said. There was a tooth missing from her mouth.

“Of course you do,” Fugue encouraged her, Shun starting up his song from the beginning again. The boy grinned proudly at Taern, seeking praise for the way he had remembered the words this time around. The girl joined in on the song adding her own words here and there and leaving out others. She leaned against Taern’s leg, unafraid of the tall, dark and strange man because if Shun was sitting there singing with him, why shouldn’t she? Shun was after all, the leader of their posse.

The other girl ogled the musen, bouncing. “Will you dance with me, Fugue?” She grinned at him, obviously not a stranger to dancing with him. Trying to peer over the edge of Fugue’s bowl, she wanted to know if his porridge was gone yet, because Loclaren had taught her food was very important and should not be wasted.

“Only if Taern won’t mind this fair young maiden stealing his companion away~!” He winked at the other demon and sprung to his feet, finishing off his bowl of food in one smooth movement. Bowing down and taking the girl’s hand he said: “May I have this dance, Princess?” The girl giggled in delight.

As the man spoke, Alexander let his mind gently touch the other in question, as if asking permission to seek his identity. He knew almost instantly who, or rather, what he was dealing with, but he also felt that this man deserved the respect to realise he knew. Nodding his head in acknowledgement of the other's introduction, he made a bow quite like the earlier one. One hand folded against his chest and the upper part of his body bending over slightly.

"My name is Alexander." Straightening himself, and his glasses, he motioned at the small briefcase he held. "I am a Peace Keeper and as such, I observe and document. This road, as interesting as it is with it's myriad of occupants, has little to tell me after the weeks I have travelled it." now he let his gaze wander across the clearing where people of various ages, races and sexes were merrily dancing and singing along to a jolly tune.

"Your company, with all of it's people, seems to be telling tales of both beginnings," He looked at little Shun, "continuations," Here he let his eyes rest on many of the travellers, "and endings." His eyes finished their journey as they came to rest upon one of the older women whose greying hair did indeed tell the tales of her lifetime.

Turning back to the other man, he touched his free hand upon his briefcase, his eyes momentarily loosing focus as he wondered what marvellous things he might record while in the presence of these people.

"I humbly request permission to join your troupe for a while and record these tales."

Especially some of them. His mind touched the forbidden journey of the past for only a moment as he thought back on the man that had led him here. He did not think he had ever met one of his kind before. A Phlinx. such an interesting thing. However, he did know that the race was quite secretive and secluded, his presence as a Peace Keeper was most likely unwelcome. Ah well, he could only hope the man realised that a Peace Keeper was bound to secrecy. It would be a pity indeed to see the man leave.

Loclaran inclined his head, an eyebrow raising at the man’s introduction. He’d never met an actual Peace Keeper, Treven had written about meeting one once in his diary, but had never actually mentioned it to Alais. The troupe leader listened thoughtfully, shadows sliding through his thoughts at the man’s request. He let silence fall between them for a moment, thinking.

“For most joining the troupe, we have simple rules. Pay your way in coin or work and don’t start trouble. I think there is potential in your request for trouble.” He fingered the smooth wood of the syrinx in his hands, running careful fingers over the pipe as he spoke. “If you wish to join you may, however you must abide by our rules, and one additional… request.” He said the word firmly, making it obvious this was also a rule of a sort.

“Each person whose story you wish to record, you must ask permission first, and you must gain that permission before recording their history. Many in the troupe stay here because it is safe, a haven from their past that they wish to forget, and which they dearly pray to their gods that history will forget.” Alais asked, silver gaze finally lifting to meet Alexander’s. “If you can abide by that, you may stay and be welcome. If you cannot I must ask you to leave.”

~

“Bah, everyone has a story, but if you don’t wish to tell you don’t need to make excuses.” Alexis said with a brief smile at Nariko, “It’s an unwritten rule of the Troupe – you don’t have to share anything but the work.”

“But the play is awful nice.” Recklan’s girl purred, nuzzling her lover’s neck with a smile.

“Ah, but sharing in that would piss off Recklan I think.” Alex said with some amusement. “HE certainly doesn’t view sharing your delightful entertainments with the group as neccessary.”

She gave a mock, kittenish growl, breaking off into a delighted laugh as Recklan glared sternly at Alex, as though he’d suggested just that very thing.

~

“What’s tomorrow?” Xander asked, walking around the wagon with a grin, drying his hands off- somewhat ineffectually – on his pants. He looked like he’d been doused in the river, his tunic was hanging around his neck, dripping water down his skin, his pants clung to his muscled legs, just as soaked through. His long hair, also wet, hung straight behind him, clinging to his back in a wild color that looked a bit like the deep, saturated blue found in the eye of a peacock’s feather.

He jostled Caden as he walked over, grinning as he stopped right next to the other man, bending down to run a hand over the wagon wheel and whistling low, “Fixed it again. I don’t know how you do that Caden, but you sure are a lifesaver.” His head tilted up and he shook it with a smile, “We should get you to make some extra wheels, so we’re not stuck in place waiting for a fix every time one cracks.”

It was unusual. Never before, or at least, not since a very long time, had he have to ask for permission to record. Sure, he always asked for permission, but that was more of a formality then actual asking. however, unusual as it might be, it was not unmanageable. He would ask them all, in time. For now though, he was actually considering taking a rest. Though his fingers itched to write down all that he saw, his mind was weary and he was feeling thoroughly uninspired. Strange feeling.

Mother had it once, a long time ago, and she had said that the best way of getting inspired was to take a break. He would ask them tomorrow. They did not look as if they wished to be confronted by him right now anyway. Observing the dancing and singing once more, he frowned at the possibility that he would be refused. It would not be pleasant. But then, he did not wish to know of their pasts right now. He wanted to conserve their future.

"It shall be done as you ask. I will ask for their permission." Turning his focus back towards the troupe leader, he cocked his head slightly in question. "Do I have yours? I emphasize that what I wish to write about is your present, not the past. I am not one to take the life of others."

“I will consider it.” Loclaran inclined his head slightly, his lips curving. “If you consider leaving out certain details, that is.” He clapped a hand on Alexander’s shoulder and nodded his head in the direction of the cook fires, “But discussion of that can wait. It is dinnertime and I’m sure you must be hungry and wanting to meet everyone. We’ll have to find a space for you to sleep and,” He looked the peacekeeper up and down, “do you carry bedding somewhere?” He didn’t give Alexander time to answer before giving an encouraging push towards the fires, he set off towards them, expecting Alexander to follow.

“Do you need to sleep inside a wagon or tent, or will space by the fires be enough? Can you do anything besides write that might be of use?” He mentally went over a list of things that might be in the range of a peacekeeper’s abilities, wondering if he dared even try to give the man tasks. He’d not heard much in the way of their abilities, so where to put the man was up for grabs in his mind. “We typically set the new folk to the simpler tasks- like peeling roots for dinner and gathering woods until we know their skills, but if you know where you’re useful it’d save us some time.” He glanced back with a grin, “There are always kids to gather wood and peel tubers, skilled tasks we sometimes are lacking in.”

Loclaran took off his scarf as he walked, using it to mop up the sweat of the day, holding it in a hand unmindful of his naked scalp. He moved with easy confidence towards his camp, only glancing back to see whether Alexander was keeping up or not.

Leaving certain details out? He felt his own lips curl up slightly before his eyes met the ground and he composed himself. That was new. But, he would try his best to not stalk anyone around camp. It would be somewhat uncomfortable. Besides, he was most interested in the being that had send him towards this man. Letting his eyes flick towards the wagon the Phlinx had just fixed, he made a mental note to not keep to much of an obvious eye on him before following the Troupe leader.

At the questions he started a bit, not expecting them to actually care where he rested during the night. "I do not sleep. A seat near the fire is enough." He'd have enough light to do his writing and there would be no cold air seeping into his clothes to sprinkle them in dew. It was a pain to meditate in a wet suit so he'd rather not go there.

"As for any skills I may have..." Good question, what could he do for these people? He was good with knives and proficient in many styles of fighting but he didn't really see how that could be of use. Nor did he wish to reveal it to anyone. His storytelling? Not useful within a community. "I can hunt? I am... not quite sure what kind of abilities might be useful in a group such as this. My apologies."

The tune was catchy and, although he did not know the words, Taern accompanied the young singers by humming along. Shun rocked in tune to the beat of the music on his lap and Taern moved with him, his arms securely around his waist to prevent him from falling off his knee. Their performance soon drew the attention of some nearby children and the small girls approached their friend without fear of the large stranger with him; but the warm smile he sent them was enough to banish any reservations they may have had.

Accepting the silent invitation she made herself comfortable and leaned against the man's leg and Taern reached out to tenderly stroke her hair without inhibition. He never felt more at peace than when he was in the company of children.

Once the song reached its climax, one of the girls solicited Fugue in a dance. The musen didn't refuse and Taern playfully gave him his blessing even though he didn't want the girl to leave his side just yet. The Demon watched the heartening sight of the tall man leading his much shorter partner in dance and he realized that this young man was much better with children than he first suspected. He also noticed that he was an exceptional dancer.

"Your friend is quite the talented entertainer," he said to Shun of Fugue and turned back to his meal.

The girl Nami, composer of the song Shun and the girls had been singing joined them with a wicked grin. There was a small drum at her hip, which she smoothly positioned between her legs, the woman’s fingers starting to rap the leather skin in an upbeat tempo that echoed through the camp ground and drew the attention of more of the caravan’s members. There was laughter, people recognising the music and those who had finished eating, joining in with their own melodies. It wasn’t long till a small part of the caravan’s people performed as one, an improvised flow of music whirling around their cooking fire.

Fugue danced with the older of the two sisters, her braids whipping around her as he made her twirl. As others two others (Fugue couldn’t tell who they were, too intent on his own movements) joined them, she giggled and laughed, cheeks flushed bright in effort and glee. The muzen let her stand on his feet, leading their dance until the girl’s father tagged him for a switch. With a graceful movement he bowed and delicately held the girl’s hand out, kissing the knuckles briefly before smiling at her. “Until we meet again, fair damsel,” he greeted her, before she was swept into another twirl by her own father. The younger sister wriggled at Taern’s side, wanting the same treatment; to be twirled high up in the air.

“The girls love to dance with Fugue,” Shun answered the demon, fidgeting on his lap a little. The song and dance were making him restless. He looked behind him momentarily, wanting to whisper in Taern’s ear, even though he knew better than to whisper. “I think the boys like it, too. But they’re afraid to say so.”

In the mean time, the muzen couldn’t keep still after having had a taste of dancing. Even though he had just eaten, he moved with the practised ease of a professional, lavender eyes keen on a chance to pick another partner. Taern was laden with children so to speak and everyone else at their fire were either making music or already moving. There was no other way than to expand his reach to the cooking fire next to theirs, where he could see Alexis, Nariko, Reclan, his girl and Gran Gran sitting rather unaffected around the fire. It was an easy pick between those people: flashing Alexis a grin and offering dear old Gran Gran a wink, Fugue approached the hunched Nariko from behind, placing a hand on her shoulder and leaning forward to look around her. His smile was warm and inviting, even though the Dream Walker wouldn’t be able to see it. “Would you like to join us, miss?”

With all the loud music and singing going on around she had not heard him approach and the sudden hand on her shoulder startled her enough to let out a small sound. She immediately cursed herself silently for letting her guard down.
“Would you like to join us, miss?” she heard a voice say. She recognized the voice to belong to the muzen Fugue.

Join them? Doing what? Surely he couldn't mean for her to dance? Did he forget she was blind?
“I don't think that would be a good idea”, she said. Even if the muzen could deal with her lack of sight, she did not feel like being in the center of attention by dancing in front of everyone. She could already feel the people around her staring at her.

“Oh come on Nariko, dance with him! He's a really good dancer, he'll take care of you”, Reclan insisted.
Forcing a smile on her face, she slowly got up. “Well, I guess I don't have much of a choice here. I'll never hear the end of it if I refuse.”

“Hunting, fishing, gathering wood, helping with meal preparation.” Loclaran listed them with a grin, “We can always use more washers, cooks-“ He pointed over at one elderly lady with the bandana grasped firmly in his hand, “Jasamyn is ready to retire from the cookfires any day now, fixing things-you probably saw Caden as you came in fixing one of our wheels, talented hands are always welcome.” He said firmly as he guided Alexander over to one of the fires, “As long as there’s room and no one is bothered by your presence, you can sit at any fire you like at night.”

“For now you can help with the hunting. If there is something else you prefer you are more than welcome to pitch in.” He grinned mischievously, “You’re always welcome to help dig latrine pits while we’re on the road. Recklan hates the job, but it has to be done and it was the only thing he knew how to do when he got here.”

With a smile Fugue held out his hand for Nariko to lean on as she got up. Though she seemed reluctant to join him, she had decided to do so after all and the fact pleased the muzen. He had observed her on occasion for the three days she had joined the caravan and had always found her face frowning, looking sad or pained. It were the small things in her face that betrayed a troubled past: the sadness she hid in her gaze, the fake smile she offered the people of the caravan to leave her alone, the shy body language like she wanted to hide away. It made Fugue feel a little trouble. He hoped he could inspire a smile from her, a real smile.

His long fingers closed around hers, his body moving to lead hers as he guided her into the movement of the dance. One didn’t need eyes to dance, just heart. He hoped he could help Nariko find it.

Flashing Taern a quick look to see if Shun wasn’t being a bother to him (and checking up on the little one because he was somewhat in Fugue’s care), the muzen decided that Tarn was a good babysitter for the boy while he would attempt to lighten a heart. Taking both Nariko’s hands in his own, he gently pulled her out into the open, the blanket she had been huddled in falling away from her body and revealing the pretty girl underneath.

“You can follow my lead,” Fugue told her tenderly, his thumbs rubbing over her hands to indicate he mant his words. He didn’t mean to make the gesture feel flirty, he just liked the contact. “I won’t let you fall, I promise.” And with that said, he pulled Nariko into a double-bodied twirl in time with the music, making a large arc, so she wouldn’t stumble or fall.

(Sorry for the delay. I really didn't know what to post but knew I had to post something because it was too long. Sad )

Taern watched the joyous dancing. There was entertainment with his meal and Shun close by his side. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been this content within the past few months. He'd been so cautious for survival's sake that he was never able to relax like he could now surrounded by people who, most likely, weren't going to slit his throat the moment he fell asleep.

It was at that moment that Taern realized that his guard was down. Under other circumstances and, had this been less than a sunset ago, that fact would have unsettled him. Without having to worry about his next meal or finding nooks and caverns within the forest to conceal himself from predators, he was starting to feel like a 'human being' again, and not some beast mid-way on the food chain.

Taern emptied his bowl and downed the dregs with a swift chug before immediately calling for a second helping. Shun was only too gracious to play the eager host, filling the bowl right up to the brim in some curious experiment to see just how much this stranger could eat. Taern didn't disappoint him and even though he took longer to finish his meal this time, he left it just as empty as he did before.

"More?" Shun asked incredulously. In a party of hardened warriors he was used to seeing men guzzle down food like ravenous bears, but no matter how many times he witnessed it, it always amazed him how the adults could eat so much.

Before Taern could politely decline a third serving, Shun already had the ladle in the pot. It was too late to say 'No' and, not wanting to disappoint the lad, he forced the contents of the bowl down.
