With night rapidly approaching, Fugue was growing more anxious and restless by the second. All around him, the caravan people were huddling up into tents and wagons, arming themselves against the cold night that was coming by seeking the warm and inviting company of each other. It were times like these that Fugue would feel a little lonely, despite being surrounded by so many people. He had made a lot of friends along the way and all of the children of the caravan loved him: Wenwen and Shannon had even taken the courtesy to braid his hair today, sticking small daisies into the honey-coloured locks. The daisies were gone now, but the messy braid remained, unable to contain all of his wavy hair.

The small cooking fires still crackled in the darkness, but their occupants were growing less in numbers as twilight faded into night and Fugue saw his chances for company diminish. Even though he had been around the caravan long enough, he would be sleeping alone. He wasn’t looking for something romantical (after all, Zoufie had been his first and only love and he had been happy for as long as it had lasted – it had been enough for one lifetime), but just someone to hold or lay down against. He needed the physical contact to ensure himself that he wasn’t alone.

There were three figures left by the fire and Fugue ventured out to join them. His purple bandana was draped around his shoulders and he pulled it around him closer, to guard against the creeping chill. He recognized one of the figures at the fire just by looking at his back. He slid up to him, nodding a polite good-evening to the others around the fire. With a small smile playing on his purple lips, Fugue was bold enough to place his hand on the man’s shoulder. The touch felt good. “Good evening, Caden. Would you mind if I sat with you for a little while?”

Caden was considering his options. The Peacekeeper had been accepted into the caravan, which should have been a sure sign that Caden should leave. The Phlinxes have avoided Peacekeepers for so long not only out of privacy, but as a necessity to protect their race. Yet, Alaistar (or Star as Caden called him in his mind) had put the condition that the Peacekeeper must ask permission before he recorded. The question was whether the Peacekeeper would keep his promise.

The real reason that Caden was hesitating was that he simply didn't want to go. There were so many interesting things here. The people and the traveling. Star, Xander and Alexis, even the Peacekeeper were all fascinating. Somehow, Caden had gotten use to the company and the gypsy in his heart had finally found a place that he belonged. But that wasn't true. He didn't belong, not even among his own people. He pushed the thought away. Dreary thoughts made dreary people and that was simply boring.

Still, he had to decide. Leave or stay?

A hand touched his shoulder, startling him. He blinked and looked up into lavender eyes and a shy smile. Fugue. For a moment, in the firelight, Fugue was truly beautiful. The man had always been attractive, but now the firelight caressed over his skin and seemed to give him a soft glow. His skin look warm, but his purple lips looked cold. For a moment, Caden wondered if he could warm those lips.

The thought surprised him and he wondered if Marco had been right. Perhaps he had been celibate for a bit too long. He hadn't wanted to entangle himself with anyone in the caravan, especially since he could leave at any moment.

An easy smile curled his lips. "A beautiful butterfly wishes to sit beside me. It would go against nature to deny such a thing." He patted the seat next to him. "Come now, unless you would prefer my lap instead." He grinned and waggled his eyebrows.

Caden always made him feel at ease. He was friendly and kind and everyone around the caravan seemed to carry a kind of fondness for the man. Fugue was no different. He would have loved to get to know the other better, but there were chores to be done around the caravan and Fugue wasn’t the kind of person to impose on the private life of another. It was for that same reason he didn’t know nearly as much about the Blade Master brothers and the troupe leader Alaister as he would have liked.

Drawing his hand back to rest under the bandana he had wrapped around him, Fugue quietly chuckled to hide the warm and embarrassed glow that pushed to the surface of his face. He had never been very good with compliments or flirtatious words, so he chose to talk around it. “Be careful what you offer, Caden. Because I’m truly considering it. It’s rather chilly tonight.” But as opposed to his words, Fugue slid into a sitting position next to the other man, sitting as close to him as he could without actually touching shoulders. If he could be like this for awhile, he would be content. It wasn’t actually touching, but it was so close to it that it could set his anxious heart at ease.

The muzen stared into the fire for a little bit, drawing his legs up to his body to huddle up into himself. He glanced at Caden from the corner of his eyes. “What were you thinking of?” Despite his easy smile, Fugue could instinctively feel that something might have been bothering the other. If it was something he could help with, he wouldn’t hesitate to offer his services.

"Oh?" Caden asked. "Well, then I'll have to make my offers more detailed just in case you accept any of them."

He gave him a wicked grin as the Muzen sat next to him. Close enough for Caden to notice his body heat and a slight tension that eased a little, but didn't completely disperse. He wondered what it was. Fugue was always a bit quieter than most of the caravan, but he was a friendly sort. Now that he thought about it, it seemed strange that the man wasn't already asleep or even why he felt the need to ask permission to seat.

Hmmm. Curious.

The next question caught him off-guard. He blinked and focused. "Ah, I was thinking that you're chilly and my blanket is in the wagon." He wrapped an arm around Fugue's waist and tugged him closer, so their bodies were pressed against each other, hip to hip, shoulder to shoulder. "So this will have to do instead."

“Liar,” Fugue accused Caden under his breath, but he decided not to pursue the line of conversation. If Caden wanted to talk about it, he’d talk. Men were easy to figure out like that. The best thing one could do was just sit beside them and leave them alone until they felt comfortable enough to open up. It was different with women, they were much more complicated.

Fugue shifted against Caden, angling his shoulder in such away that he could rest a part of his back against the other’s side. Caden’s embrace was warm and Fugue welcomed the sensation, almost wishing he could wrap the man around him like a blanket. He sneaked a look at his fire-lit profile, as his hand came to rest over Caden’s, seeking the warmth of that touch too. It was a light and instinctive touch, his fingers wriggling to interlace. “Can I ask you a personal question, Caden? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.”

Fugue reckoned that tonight was as good as any night to make an effort to get to know the other better. “I was wondering, ever since I’ve joined the caravan, I’ve seen you win 36 drinking games. Why do you keep drinking?” He was silent a few second, mulling the possibilities over in his mind. “Could it be you’re trying to forget something?”

"Only 36? Hmm, I must be losing my touch." He smiled and noticed the man's touch on his. A thought came to mine and he studied the man even more. "Hmmm, I will answer your question if you promise to answer one of mine in return?"

He pulled away from Fugue, both studying his reaction and wanting to see his face. "Deal?"

Surprised by the sudden movement and the chill that came with it, Fugue instinctively wrapped his arms around himself. He turned to regard Caden, blinking a little in surprise. When he was not travelling with others or taking care of the children, Fugue survived on being a merchant. So he wasn’t a stranger to this kind of bargain, but he hasn’t expected to have to strike it with the other.

Nodding, he agreed. “That seems fair,” he answered, wondering what Caden would want to ask him. Fugue kept near to no secrets. He would talk around some facts if he didn’t want to share them, but that was all. “Ask away.”
