Banowynn's body held perfectly still. His face was lifted to the early morning sun, his long red and black hair streaming behind him in the light breeze. His golden eyes were closed, the specks of green and gold shuttered to the world as the monk-turned-elemental sat with his feet crossed, his hands lightly resting on his legs. He made no sound as he meditated, letting the world around him sing his prayers for him- the Earth spoke far more eloquently than he did - and let the sounds lull his mind to peace.

There was silence around him, but for the rustling of the wind in the trees, a few birds above him, some squirrels perhaps. Nothing intrusive to his introspection- not a single sound was out of place. He was alone at the edge of a grassy meadow, settled atop a great rock. His cart rested beside the rock, packed up and ready to go after his morning meditation.

The man was dressed simply; a plain tunic of soft, rust colored cotton was belted over loose brown pants by way of a darker brown fabric belt. Hanging from his belt was a stream of beads, the most prominent of which was a stylized bird- a rooster- hidden among the colorful strands. His feet were completely bare, the bottoms darkened with soot and dirt, but he didn’t seem to notice.

Suddenly, he yawned, peeking one eye open to look at the other side of the meadow where a dark shadow had entered the little opening. It paused every few moments to lazily take a mouthful of the green grass, making its way every so slowly to the monk. He chuckled, his voice soft as he spoke to the beast, “So, you’ve returned.”

Nothing was out of place in his world, at least- so it seemed on the outside. On the inside he had peace as well, although he had the nagging suspicion that something was missing. He wasn’t lonely, to his mind, he had Patches – the ugliest horse he had ever seen.

He watched as Patches made his way nonchalantly over the meadow, amusement bubbling in him. He imagined there was a sort of a sheepish look on the great beast’s narrow face. The halter the grey, black and white spotted horse wore was broken in three different spots, sitting jauntily askew much like a drunk wearing a hat.

“You look like you’ve had a rough night.” The blacksmith unfolded himself from the rock as the horse neared and finally stopped near the cart, glancing up at him once, and then nibbling at a dandelion ever so carefully. “Well, that’s what you get for running away.” He said in his soft baritone, not a hint of pity for the animal in his tone.

He chuckled as Patches lifted his great, ungainly head and nudged his chest, finally settling his great head on Banowynn’s shoulder. He scratched behind Patches’ ears and carefully began detangling the halter, “Next time perhaps you will listen when I say ‘hold still’.” He chided as he pulled the halter from Patches, slipping to the cart and grabbing a currycomb.

He began quickly, not bothering to re-tie the horse up as he ran the brush firmly over the horse’s hide. Patches wasn’t a wandering soul- already leaning into the strokes- the horse had simply left his side for a bit. He was nearly done when he heard a soft noise disturbing the natural quiet, even Patches with his barely-there ear on one side, was cocking his good ear to the noise and eying Banowyn- clearly expecting some sort of action from the monk.

With a smile, he put down the comb, “All right, we’ll check it out.” He patted the horse, listening carefully. It was probably an animal.

Strains of the noise came from within the deep woods behind his card. He blinked.

It did sound an awful lot like someone – maybe even a child- crying.

He hadn’t seen another soul for days, not since he left the road at the last city. It wasn’t an area typically populated by others, which was why he preferred it when he needed a break from the towns and cities he stopped at, or from the crowds traveling the roads.

So who was out there? And sobbing their heart out, if his ears were to be believed?

The leaves that crushed underneath his bare feet felt welcoming and Liam let out a relieved sigh as he entered the outskirts of the woods. He lay his hands on the bark of a familiar tree and he closed his grey eyes for a moment to catch his breath. Underneath his hands he could feel the slow rhythm of life flowing through the wood and he used it to calm his aching heart. Hiding away from sight he slumped against the mother oak and snuggled up against it for a moment.

He had been wandering the streets of the small city the whole day, but he had once again come back empty handed. Liam didn’t like the cities. They were noisy and filled with tall intimidating people. Being a small person he was always easily overlooked and bumped into or even run over. But he couldn’t stop his quest. Some time ago he had woken up in this strange place, all alone, with no one to protect him. Where were his friends? He couldn’t remember what happened or how he had gotten there, but he knew that he had to get back to them no matter what. He had been so scared of being alone that he had hardly slept or ate during his desperate search.

Oh, how he wished his friends were there with him. Like Donovan, or Raffael, or even Zayr. He would cling to them just as long until they picked him up and carried him around. He would snuggle into their warm embrace and allow himself to be cuddled. They always made him feel safe, and he knew they would protect him, like they had sworn on the day they had joined their group of monks. He bit his lip as he wondered it he would even recognize them if he saw them. He himself had woken up in this different form. Had the same happened to the others? Or was he really alone?

Snap. Liam jumped up in fright at the sound of a snapping twig and quickly hid behind one of the tree’s big roots. His heart thumped loudly in his chest as his small grey eyes searched the area and landed on a small bush. The leaves were shaking and Liam could hear the noises of something large hiding in it. He held his breath and screwed his eyes shut, making himself as small as possible when the monster finally emerged. He didn’t dare to peek as he heard the thumping noises of heavy feet making its way into to the clearing.

The Rat clung to the tree’s root with all his might, praying to whatever God was listening that the monster wouldn’t eat him. The steps were getting closer and suddenly he could sense the warmth of a large body standing next to him. The creature snorted and the Rat’s body trembled in fright as he felt warm breath brush over his skin. It moved its head from his bare arms up to his neck and his body completely tensed up when he felt large, hairy lips nip as his skin curiously. Liam let out a mewl in fright as the lips brushed his ear in their way up, he did not even dare to sneak a peek. But he let out a cry in surprise when the creature suddenly chomped down on his hair and he clawed his arms around him wildly until the creature released him in equal surprise.

Hesitatingly the small boy opened his eyes and panted as he glanced up at the creature that had assaulted him. A slight wave of relieve washed over him when he came eye-to-eye with something that actually wasn’t so scary at all; it was just a horse. The animal cocked its head as it stared at him in wonder, but then moved in to try another bite of those delicious dark brown curls. Liam giggled as the hairs of the horse’s moustache tickled him and he pushed him away by the nose. “Don’t do that silly, my hair isn’t grass!” then he noticed the broken halter on the horse’s head, “Where’s your owner, horsey? Did you get lost too?” The horse stared into his grey eyes for a moment as if he seemed to muse on his question, but then turned abruptly and started heading back the way it came.

“W-wait! Don’t leave me here alone!” the Rat cried after him and he ran after him, grabbing a piece of the torn rein. He couldn’t let this creature wander off on its own, could he? He was just as vulnerable to the dark creatures lurking in these woods as he was. He figured that perhaps they should stick together, or that perhaps it was fate that brought this horse to him. Whatever reason, it felt nice to finally have a large companion next to him again. The horse continued his sluggish stride, and Liam let him lead their way through the woods.

They walked for awhile and Liam marveled at the scenery. He had never dared to venture into the woods this far on his own before. There were ponds and waterfalls and big fallen trees and even bigger living trees. But as they continued on, the small boy was having more and more trouble keeping up with the horse’s long legs. “W-wait, not so fast!” he begged, but the horse knew where it was going and even quickened its stride a little as it seemed to get closer to its destination. “Wait!” Liam cried, heart racing at the thought of being left behind again, but he nearly had to run to keep up now, “Please wait!” But in the end he had to let go of the reins or he would have been dragged along. The horse sped off towards its destination, leaving the poor little monk behind in the middle of the woods.

The Rat stopped in disbelief as he watched the back of the horse disappear between the trees. His heart pounded heavily in his chest from running and he breathed heavily to catch his breath. He glanced around but the scenery was completely unfamiliar. Where was he? Had they really walked that far? He unconsciously wrapped his arms around himself in protection, suddenly feeling extremely vulnerable again. His eyes shifted around, trying to find the path from which they came, but due to the running he wasn’t sure which way they had come again.

He jumped up when a nearby crow cawed at him and with a yelp he toppled over in his fright. He rolled down a small hill until he crashed into a pile of leaves, yelping when a sharp branch cut into his lower left arm. Crawling out of the leaves he quickly cradled it with his hand and he scrambled backwards until his back bumped into a tree. The nice scenery of the woods suddenly felt a lot less welcome, every unfamiliar sound making him jump up in fright. Tears started to sting behind his eyes and he choked back a sob. He was lost. Completely lost and utterly alone. The realization had his heart sink and he suddenly felt more alone than he had ever felt. He had lost his friends, and now even this horse had left him!

Slowly the stinging tears started rolling down his cheeks. First one, but soon followed by more, until they turned into painful flowing rivers down his rosy cheeks. He would never be able to find his way back! He would never be able to survive on his own! His thin frame shook with uncontrollable sobs as he cried in misery. But the worst would be that he would never be able to find back his friends! So he curled up against the tree, hiding his face and cradling his bleeding arm, praying for a miracle that someone would find him.

"Come on then Patches, let us find the source of this sadness." Banty patted the horse, heading for the woods, trusting the horse to follow- if no other reason than because no horse liked being alone, being a herd animal.

Banowyn wasn't the most graceful woodsman, but he knew the basics. He left his wagon with no fear, wandering towards the source of the noise, his curious gaze searching the woods as the crying became louder and they neared the child. It was clearly a child, he had already decided, he'd never heard a non-humanoid creature cry like that.

"Hello? Are you all right?" He called, when he judged they were close enough, he still couldn't see the source of the noise, but they had to be close.

He grunted as Patches nudged his back and sidled in front of him, suddenly deciding apparently that he needed to lead the way. He chuckled and slapped the great horse's rump affectionately, "Calm down Patches, we don't want to frighten the child with your ugly mug."

"Hello? Are you all right?"

Liam startled at the voice, due to his own crying he hadn’t heard the man approach. He quickly silenced his crying by clasping is hands over his mouth, merely hiccupping with tiny sobs as he tried to stay as quiet as possible. His heart thumped in his chest as he peeked around the tree to gaze up at the man, of whom he hadn’t yet decided was his killer or savior.

The man he saw seemed full of gentle pride, with long greenish black hair with one red streak down the middle. If he hadn’t been so tall and muscular Liam would even have thought him to be beautiful. He hiccupped and wiped away his tears with his hands clumsily. Why had this man come out here in the woods? Was he a traveler? He hid himself a little better when another thought crossed his mind. Maybe he was a rogue? A murderer!

He hiccupped again, but gasped in surprise when he saw the horse from earlier push past the man. He couldn’t hear what the man said to him, but his expression seemed sincere. One who cared for animals couldn’t be that bad, could he? Nonetheless his heart started racing with fright when the horse was starting to make its way towards him, apparently ready for another taste of those delicious curls.

He inched backwards, but he knew escaping was futile. If he got away too far from the tree the tall scary man would be able to spot him, but if the horse dragged him out of his hiding by the hair, he would spot him as well. His grey eyes watered again when faced with this dilemma and he curled himself into a little ball as he heard the horse’s steps nearing him. “Please don’t kill me!” he called loud enough for the man to hear.

The voice came from behind a tree, within some brush ahead of him. Banowyn slowly followed Patches, blinking in surprise at the boy's plaintive plea. "And why would Banty be wanting to kill you child?" He asked with a soft chuckle, "I am not in the habit of killing younglings little one. I've not the heart. "

The Rooster stopped a few feet from the tree, watching as Patches pushed through the brush and rounded the great tree. Banty couldn't see hide nor hair of the voice behind the tree, but he was forced to re-evaluate the age of the child by his voice. At least 14 or 15 he figured, maybe older (he'd never been a good judge of these things). His soft voice continued as he waited, "Old Patches here heard your calling, and figured we oughter come find who's a-hurtin' and see what we can do to help. He's not one to ignore a cry."

He thought for a moment, and then carefully hunkered down in the brush, noting the berries in the crushed brambles on the little hill. He began quietly harvesting the little fruits as he settled, figuring on appearing as innocuous as possible- he was aware he was a bit larger than most, and to a frightened child he could appear quite intimidating.

"So here Patches is, with Banowyn in tow. Can I help you youngling, or prefer I haul old Patches back to the wagon, and leave you be with your sorrows?" He waited patiently for the boy's answer, popping a fat, juicy berry between his lips.

[Im sorry he's a whiner, but he'll grow out of it once he gets to know/recognizes Banty...]

Liam dared to sneak a peek from behind the tree at his words, clutching his slightly bleeding arm to his chest. He watched as the man hunched down to harvest the berries, and at the same moment his own little stomach churned for attention. He was lost, hungry and his arm stung with pain, and he right now this man was his only chance of finding his way back. He almost felt like crying again when he summed it up, but instead quickly wiped the tears from his eyes as he hesitatingly stood up from his hiding place. He had to do this; he had to conquer his fears if he wanted to survive on his own. Oh, how he wished he was as brave as Raffael or as strong as Donovan.

Patches, as the horse seemed to be called, was almost at his side now, and he reached forward to caress his nose as he appeared from behind the tree. The Rat’s appearance wasn’t very different from a young boy’s, but his dark grey eyes betrayed he had lived quite a bit longer than that. But despite his true age he was still nothing but a scared individual.

“Please sir, I don’t know where to go… I got lost and then I fell and I was scared and and and… my arm really hurts!” he cried, fresh tears already presenting themselves in the corners of his eyes as he wrapped his arms around himself tightly. He still wasn’t sure if he could trust the tall man plucking the berries, but it seemed he had no other choice. His stomach churned again at the sight of the berries, and he slowly started to make his way over, although staying at a safe distance and seeking support from Patches’s calm strength.

(Hope you don't mind a wee bit of manhandling lol, I figured this would move them along a bit)

“Oy.” Banowyn said in surprise, glancing up at the boy who peeked out from beside Patches. He gave the child a once over, his clever eyes taking in the boy’s disheveled appearance. He put a handful of berries into a clean kerchief he pulled from a pocket, wrapping them carefully and sticking them back into his pocket.

“A bad day you have had indeed little one.”

He hoisted himself up, setting his bare feet to the mother Earth, slowly straightening to give the child time to adjust to his intimidating form before giving a smile to the boy, “I be Banowyn Gallowglauss, and that overgrown mutt beggin’ you for coddles be Patches.” He nodded to the horse with a grin and moved close enough to give the ugly beast a pat, “I’m sure Patches wouldn’t mind giving you a wee bit of a rest on the way back to the wagon if you’ve a mind to come with us a ways.” He gave the boy a more obvious once over, his eyes hesitating over the bleeding scratches on his arm, “I can take care of that arm of yours back at the cart as well, it must be hurting you something fierce.”

He slid a hand beneath Patches’ nose and grabbed a strap of the dangling halter, blithely unbuckling the thing before it’s loose ends got caught in something and the horse hurt himself. He draped it over the horse as he got closer to the boy and, in a way that seemed all at once fast, sneaky, and surprising, between one second and the next the boy was abruptly settled on top of the horse, the halter in his lap.

“There we go.” He clucked at Patches and pat his side, dropping the kerchief of berries in the boy’s lap on top of the halter, “Here, I never knew a boy who couldn’t eat.” He grinned at his own joke and turned, trusting the horse, and consequently the boy as well, would follow.

’Banowyn?’ Liam thought as the man introduced himself. Why did it sound so familiar? But before he could dawdle upon that thought some more he was suddenly lifted up and with a squeak he was settled upon the horse’s back. His face flustered a bright red at the sudden touch, but before he could protest the taller man dropped the handkerchief with berries in his hands. His small stomach growled as the animal under him started moving and he anxiously clamped himself to its back. Where were they going? His ‘cart’?

The Rat regarded the man from where he sat, higher than the other. Banowyn seemed kind and somehow familiar. He could soon feel himself relaxing a bit more as they walked through the forest, grateful to be allowed to ride on Patches’ back. Carefully he dared to pop a berry in his mouth and his eyes widened a little at the yummy taste. It had been a while since he had anything decent to eat, and these sweet berries were positively delicious! The scratch on his arm didn't even bother him that much anymore.

After a while he gathered enough courage to break the silence. “M-my name is Liam, sir.” He said softly, his cheeks smudged a little with the reds and blues from the berries, “…A-and you might think I’m pretty young, but I’m actually already 21 years old!” he exclaimed proudly. He both loved and hated to be treated like a child, and he hoped telling his age would win him back a little dignity he had lost for crying in the woods like the lost child he was.

The trees soon parted, giving way a clearing of high grass, the sun finally able to shine on their faces freely again, warming their skin. In the distance Liam could see something that looked like a wooden cart. “I-is that yours, sir?” he asked, curiousness winning over fear by now, “Are you a traveler? A merchant? Where are you headed?”

“Then a pleasure it is to meet you Liam.” Banty chuckled at the youngling’s staunch defense of his age. Obviously not a child then, but certainly innocent- at least of the woods- of that much Banty was certain. The boy was certainly curious like any youngling! He glanced over at the cart and nodded with a proud grin, “Aye, for a certain mine it is, as much as any mortal being can own such a thing.”

The boys other questions were a little more difficult for Banty, after all- being a traveler insinuated that he knew where he was going, and he hadn’t known such a thing since appearing from Mother Earth so long ago. Being a merchant- now that insinuated he had something to sell, and that he always sold it as a livelihood, which he did of a sort- but only when he found himself in some sort of residential area and such people wished to trade his skills for food.

He hummed softly as he thought, “A blacksmith, I suppose, is the best description for who I am. I have wandered for quite some time, but a traveler I am not.” He patted Patches absently as he led the horse to the small, sturdy cart that held portable versions of the tools he used to work the earth into malleable form. "Perhaps Patches has a destination in mind for old Banty, but I indeed do not."

Leaving the boy on the horse for the moment, Banty moved to the cart and rummaged around for a bit, eventually pulling out an old strap of worn, but clean, fabric and a tiny pot. He set them down on the rock he’d been seated on earlier and returned to the cart for a water skin, which he slung over his shoulder before turning back to the boy.

“Help down you need?” He held his hand out with a smile.

A wandering blacksmith huh? It sounded pretty adventurous, Liam thought with a smile as he listened to the man’s story and watched the little expressions of thoughts that wrinkled the other’s face from time to time. For a moment he tried to imagine what it was like to be able to travel from town to town without a care in the world. Then suddenly a thought hit him; what if he could travel along with this man to the next town?! The town he had been exploring held nothing that could lead him to his former friends, but perhaps he would have more luck in the next town!

In his excitement he hadn’t noticed Banowyn gathering supplies from his cart until he reached a hand out to him. The smaller man looked down at him from the horse and felt a little blush creep up his cheeks at the intensity of the man’s sharp, green eyes. He could trust this man. He knew it. He felt it in his gut and every fiber of his being. There something so familiar about this man that it almost felt like home, even though he was positive they had never met before. Slowly but surely he reached out his hand and grabbed onto his bigger one.

The jump down from the horse was indeed higher than he thought, so with his other hand he supported himself on the man’s broad shoulder and let himself slide off the horse’s back. But suddenly a painful stab shot through his injured arm. It was just a scrape, but it was enough to make him a wince and lose his stance, clumsily falling against Banowyn’s broad chest.

“Aiiii, careful now.” Banowyn said, concern in his voice as he caught Liam around his upper arms and set the boy on his feet again. He smiled down at Liam and led him over to the very rock he’d perched upon earlier as he’d meditated. “Let us get that arm taken care of. “ He opened the pot and glanced at Liam’s wound, making a soft noise before returning to his cart to root around for some water to clean the mess with.

“Do you mind telling me, young Liam, why Patches has found you out here in the woods, far away from just about anything?” He said softly as the tall monk began opening pots and caring for Liam, carefully holding the boy’s arm in case he pulled away during the process- healing could be a painful process, but the cleaning was needed for the salve to sooth properly. “And injured too. You’ll forgive me I hope, for thinking so, but you do not seem like the sort to be seeking the peace of the wilderness.”

He smiled slightly, wondering if perhaps it was simply boyish fantasy? He’d come across many young things about Liam’s age who felt they needed to get away from home and join the life of a wanderer. Most of them didn’t last long, by the time Banty met them they were often on their way back home to settle down, or the next time he saw them they’d settled far away from home with a wife and children. Perhaps the boy- well, young man he supposed, at 21, was just spreading his wings a bit.

Patches meanwhile, lowered his head and began to graze, ignoring the two as though he had always meant to be right where he was.

Liam winced as the other man cared for his arm. He had never been very fond of getting his wounds treated, avoiding injury and risks as much as possible. He tried to focus on the question he was asked instead and looked away.

"I'm looking for my friends. . ." he explained, a bit saddened as he thought about them now, "Ever since I woke up in this world I've felt like I'm missing something, someone. . . But I'm not sure who they are or where they are right now, but. . . I'm sure I will recognize them when I find them!" He looked up at Banty resolutely, "I know it might sound silly, but I have to get back to them no matter what!"

He winced again at the burning sensation of cleaning his wound, but Banty held his arm in a firm grip. "I... I had no luck searching for them in the last town, so I tried to wander to the next... but I got lost." he pouted, horribly disappointed with his own weakness, "Perhaps, I was hoping. . . could I travel along with you to the next town? I-I'm very sorry to be an inconvenience. . . but I can help out too! I can cook and stuf!"

Banowynn frowned at Liam's worry over his friends, his hands stilling for a moment, it sounded familiar to him somehow. The studied the other, the beginnings of a suspicion forming in his head that he quickly discarded. He shook off the thought and smiled at Liam's assertions that he could be of great help. Banty wondered if the boy had ever cooked out in the wilderness before- not that Banty could. His general diet tended to be foraged food he found here and there throughout the day, such as the berries the boy had eaten earlier.

He inclined his head to the boy, a smile on his lips at the thought of the boy's cooking. It wasn't really a decision to make anyways- Banowynn would never have wanted to leave the boy so obviously ill-prepared out in the woods anyways. His conscious would have haunted him for doing such a thing.

"A cook I am not," He admitted wryly, "If it were not for Mother Earth's harvest I fear I would starve. Perhaps of some help you could be to old Patches and I, if you would." He covered his pots of salve carefully and began tearing up a light length of clean cloth to wrap the boy's arm with. He glanced up at Liam as he began gently wrapping the scrape, "You may come," He gave the other a conspiratorial look before glancing over at the horse, "Besides, Patches could do with the company and I talk not enough for his liking. "A gossip he is at heart, and I fear my silence bores him."

Patches raised his head, cocking his good ear towards the pair as the horse caught his name being spoken. When no summons occurred he snorted at the pair, as though commenting on Banty's words. He lowered his great head in disgust at the interruption.

[[short, sorry.... we should forward the story a little perhaps ^^;;]]

If it weren't for the other man holding his arm and wrapping it in bandages he would have launched himself forward and hugged him out of plain happiness when the words of confirmation left Banty's lips. This was the best news he had heard in a long time! Wriggling and smiling like the happiest guy in the world the smaller man waited for the other to finish before reaching forward and embracing him in a tight hug. Liam wasn't one to trust others, but once they had earned it he simply wouldn't let go of them.

"Thank you, thank you!" he exclaimed happily into the man's broad shoulder, lingering in his warmth a little longer. Banty smelled so nice... of earth, fresh grass and morning dew. The warmth of the embrace made him feel safe, and this mix with his scent reminded him of someone he knew long ago. But that thought left his mind before he could act on it, pulling back and yawning sleepily. It had been a long, exhausting day for the little Rat, and the excitement was beginning to take its toll.

"Thank you, Banty..." he said softly, his fingers lingering on the warm fabric of the man's shirt. He wondered if he would be allowed to sleep next to him, knowing it could be dreadfully cold at night in this area. It had been a long time since he had secretly snuggled up to someone to share their warmth. A single tear rolled down his cheek as a stab of emotion hit his heart once again, reminding him of how terribly he missed his friends. The mix of being tired and emotional took its toll on the boy and soon more tears followed. "I... m-miss... them... s-so.. m-much!" he hiccupped, rubbing his eyes in vain.

A warm chuckle slipped from Banowynn's lips as the other hugged him tightly. The other's happiness was palatable as the small figure thanked him. It was difficult to think of the boy in front of him as an adult, Liam seemed so young to the monk. He patted the boy on the back as the other stepped away, his voice quiet as tears slid down the boy's cheeks. "Ahh little one, it will all work itself out with time."

He smiled gently and took a bit of clean bandage and brushing the dampness from the other's face, "Come then, into the wagon and Patches will get us on our path properly. A ways we have to go until nightfall, if traveling we will be." He smiled and stood, carefully collecting what remained of his things and tucking them into the wagon with a whistle to Patches.

The horse nickered, lifting his head and eying them, as if judging for himself how serious Banty was about the call. Banty padded the great, ugly beastie and led him over to the wagon, carefully hooking the animal up to the wagon, talking to the animal quietly as he did so. When he was done, he leaned over the edge of the wagon and pulled out a bag, "If hungry you still are, more to eat there is." He smiled, "In with you then Liam."
