Fugue had to stifle a chuckle when Taern warily considered if the term ‘wanker’ to apply to him, his lips already parting to tell him that though it practically would be true (after all, he had yet to meet a man that didn’t relieve his sexual tension every once in awhile), it would be best to let the topic rest. But before he could do so, Xander picked up Shun to give him a sound scolding. Fugue watched and learned from the Blade Master – he was too soft to put anyone in place like that.

The chuckle he had been suppressing soon found its way out though, despite his attempt to be the more responsible type. Caden’s laughter was very infectious. He winked at the tinker after he had said his goodbyes. “Such soothing, poetic words though we are hardly royalty! You don't need a musen for inspiration, you're quite the poet yourself! Thank you for your help, Caden. Good luck with the wheel.”

Fugue’s attention was drawn back to Xander and Shun, gently tapping the blind Blade Master’s shoulder. “I think he has learned his lesson for the time being, Xander. Don’t be too hard on him. I’m sure Shun won’t do it again. Right, buddy?”

The boy crinkled his nose, his face a little pale because of Xander’s intimidating words. The mere thought of not being allowed to watch anymore terrified him, eyes wide and hiccupping a little. He mumbled indignantly: “I’m not your buddy.” But then he realised Xander still held his arms and would be more than able to back up this threat, so he looked at the ground and muttered an apology. “I won’t do it again.”

“Thank you, Shun,” Fugue smiled, wanting to reach out and ruffle the boy’s hair but deciding against it in the end. It seemed he had gotten on Shun’s bad side for the moment, but he was sure his mood would brighten within a few hours. Kids were like that. “How about we eat a little?” he suggested to the boy, wanting to follow Alexis' example. His eyes flitted to regard Taern. He felt a little uneasy in his presence, but wouldn’t let it keep him from being hospitable. Still addressing the boy Shun, Fugue continued: “Maybe Taern would like to join us? You two could share my meat stew.” Now who in their right mind could pass up on such a sweet offer?

Taern clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth and defensively confronted the man wearing the blindfold. It was somewhat eerie the way he seemed to look right at him, as if he suffered no visual impairment at all and, the fact that he'd been audience to his earlier battle made him question the obvious assumption that he was, indeed, blind.

The Demon opened his mouth to argue that Xander's reprimand was unwarranted but he immediately snapped his mouth shut. It wasn't the boy's fault that they, as adults, weren't mindful of their language when he was around. Still, the damage was already done and he had to admire the swordsman for disciplining the boy without resorting to physical abuse. He didn't want to quarrel with these people and, despite starting off on the wrong foot with them, they seemed amicable enough. Taern sighed and closed his fist tightly around his pendant, silently praying for patience on one breath.

Once composed, the agitation on his face melted into a neutral mask which just as quickly shifted into a light-hearted smile when Fugue extended an invitation to join them for dinner. "Oh, thank you," he accepted a little too eagerly then reached out to take one of Shun's hands in his and give it a gentle squeeze. "I'm starving, how about you, Shun?"

Xander snorted, "You do him no favors by being so easy on him Fugue. He could easily have been killed had he rushed betwixt other performers. And if he startled a horse into hurting someone we'd have to put down the horse too." Still, he released the boy and stood, his tone unapologetic as he turned towards the fires.

"Be welcome Taern the Traveler, " He spread his arms wide in the direction of the cook fires, hearing the conversation and the crackle of flames nearby, "You are welcome at any fire we have, there is usually some hearty meal being cooked over them. Our rules are simple, if you are peaceable, you may stay as long as you like. However," he grinned at this, "If you eat as much as the horses you need to do some work for your keep." He bowed lightly in the direction he'd last heard Taern's voice and smiled, "I believe I'll go check on the horses before I get my supper, so you'll have to forgive me if I do not join you."

He was no stranger to hard labour and Taern was more than willing to pull his own weight in exchange for food and shelter. The rule was a simple one and there would be no trouble from him in abiding by it, especially now that he knew he was in good company. Taern thanked Xander for his hospitality before the young man excused himself to check on the horses and he followed the verbal cue and looked around at the many campfires that were lit within the circle.

People gathered in groups around the fires, laughing and chattering away with one another, sharing stories of times long past or collecting bets on wagers made. Mouth-watering aromas of seasoned meats wafted across the campgrounds as cooks tended their spits, slowly turning large slabs of some unknown animal until it was cooked evenly through. The orange glow of the fires lit the area and emanated a warm, welcoming heat from the cool, evening air that blew around them, and yet, one person still drew their cloak tight as if they were chilled to the bone.

Taern didn't mean to stare but it was hard to ignore her, even though she was trying to be inconspicuous. There was a mysterious element about her that made him slightly uneasy, but he did his best to ignore it, preferring not to stir any enmity between them. Then Shun lightly tugged on his hand and he was distracted, and Taern turned to look him deep within the youthful exuberance that shimmered within his eyes.

"Fugue's the best cook ever," Shun spoke highly of his friend. "Sometimes I eat too much and then I get a tummy ache. But it's always worth it."

He was staring at her, she could feel it. Does he know? Nariko's heartbeat sped up and she was having trouble keeping her concentration. Then an idea popped into her head. Gently nudging Shun's mind, she made the young boy walk over to the stranger and tug at his hand. He looked away from her then and Nariko could barely hide the smile that appeared on her face. Satisfied that he was no longer watching her she withdrew from Shun's mind.

“Are you awake dear?” a voice came from next to her. The same woman that had addressed her earlier. She pulled her hood back a little and nodded. “Would you like something to eat? You must be hungry,” the woman asked.
In reality she really wasn't hungry at all. With this many people around her and all the dreams they had at night, she hadn't felt this satisfied in a long time. But of course she had to keep up the pretense of her being just a normal person. She forced a smile on her face. “Yes that would be lovely, thank you,” she answered.
The woman handed her a bowl of food and a spoon and Nariko slowly took a bite. It didn't taste too bad so she relaxed and slowly started eating.

First Taern had scolded him, then Xander. Fugue was starting to think he was the child in their company, being told off by their parents. But he didn’t let it get to him, blinking in a surprised manner when Shun told Taern he was a great cook. Sure enough he had made some vegetable dishes because his diet was a definite non-meat one, but he hadn’t expected Shun to praise him after the boy had seemed so annoyed with him earlier. It almost made him suspicious, wondering what it was that drove Shun to behave like that. But children weren’t capable of such subtle manipulation, so Fugue shrugged it off with a thankful smile. Maybe it was just the honey and sugar he always incorporated into his food. Shun was known to love sweet things.

Feeling as though the boy wouldn’t protest Fugue took his other hand, flanking Shun like Taern was, but on the other side. He lightly squeezed the boy’s fingers and pulled him in the direction of the fires. He was sure Taern would follow. “Remember that rice porridge with cinnamon and brown sugar?” His smile grew a little mischievous, remembering it himself. “You said it looked like brains. But you ate three whole bowls in the end, you little monster!”

“And what a blessing that was. The boy never eats rice,” Shun’s mother beamed when she walked up to them. In her hands she had several coloured fabrics, all clothes and scarves she had been mending while Fugue had looked after her son. She offered him a deep blue bundle. “Your shirt, Fugue. I stitched up that tear in the side and took the liberty to add a little artistic detail.”

With his free hand, the musen accepted the shirt and let his eye fall on the small purple butterfly Shun’s mother had embroided on the collar of the shirt. He could feel his heart swell with happiness. “Thank you, Esmeralda! It’s so pretty!”

“My mom is the BEST seamstress of the caravan,” Shun explained to Taern, nodding resolutely. He pulled on his own tunic to display the small, detailed birds she had stitched onto it for him. “See? Isn’t it awesome? Maybe she can make you some too!”

While Shun busied himself with impressing Taern, Fugue had a moment to turn to his mother. “No really, thanks Esmeralda. You didn’t have to do that. Next time, I’ll fix my own clothes. I’ll just have to remember to trade for a few needles in the next town.”

Shaking her head, the woman produced two long and slender sewing needles from her black hair that she pinned into the fabric of Fugue’s bandana. She hushed him before he could protest. “A thank-you for looking after Shun,” she smiled, stepping back and momentarily peeking at her boy to see if he wasn’t up to anything naughty. Approaching him from behind, she knelt down and kissed his cheek warmly. “Seems you made a new friend, huh Shun?” Eyeing Taern for a second, the woman’s cheeks grew a little rosy and she quickly stood. “He looks handsome and strong, just like daddy.”

[Muwahaha, let's all go bother Nariko when we have some grub, huhu! I just wanted to see Taern uncomfortably squirm because of female attention . . . don't worry Shivy, we're coming <3]

Marco grunted when Caden joined him, but Caden shrugged. "What can I say. When I see a person in need I am drawn to their plight."

"They call that meddling."

Caden nodded. "Yes, I agree with you, but everyone has their flaw. For example, your love for weak beer."

He barked out a laugh. "Weak beer? I could drink you under the table."

"The last man that said that found himself out of a good deal of coin."

Marco paused at that and then looked Caden over. "Well, I'm guessing you're probably not as human as you like to pretend you are."

There was only the slightest jerk in his hands to betray how much the question startled him. Unless someone was looking for it they wouldn't have noticed. Instead it just looked like he gave Marco a pondering look. "I see your point, but my head for alcohol should not call my humanity into question, just like your large and burly composition does not automatically make one of your parents a bear."

Marco blinked and stopped in his tracks and then he laughed. He slapped Caden on the back. "Always the smartass."

The slap was much harder than necessary, but Caden didn't complained, just winced and continued walking. "Each man has his talents. Mine is a tongue always ready with a quip and talented hands."

"Talented hands, huh? Well I sure haven't seen you tip toeing about with any of the fine women around camp. Or men for that matter. Guess those hands aren't as good as you think they are."

Caden gasped and put his hand to his chest. "You stab me with such words. If it weren't for your bear ancestors I would call you out on a duel. I have had not the chance to dally when I've had drinking to do."

Marco simply laughed. "There's always room for a roll in the bushes. Always."

Their conversation was interrupted when a man approached them and directed them to the wagon with the problematic wheel. Glad for it, Caden went to the wagon and began examining the wheel in question.

The road was long, dusty and surrounded by greens, browns and the occasional splash of blue. another rock found it's way in front of his shoe and he quietly and respectfully stepped over it as neatly and unhindered as he could. Best not to disturb that which he need not disturb. After all, you might never know what adventure might await the one weary traveller that came upon that rock. They might trip, and injure their ankle and be forced to accept the help of a passer by. These people could fall in love and their child might one day become a great hero.

Alexander gave the rock a look of pity. It might see great things happen, even be the cause of them, but it would be unable to tell any other person to pass what role he had played in the saving of the world. Such a drab existence. As for him, he had already accepted his role to be that of the watcher, not the causer. And he did not mind. Not at all. Though he had to admit that watching the same scenery over and over again for days was becoming quite a dull affair and he would not mind at all if some travellers were to come across him now. No, even more he longer for something to happen.

A battle, perhaps, or the discovery of a childhood lost on the pleasures of simplicity, such as diving from a rock. A smile came upon his face and his left hand curled around the handle of his briefcase as he thought back to the wonderful things he had been able to write about in the previous town. But that had already been three weeks ago. Three long, drab, dull weeks in which he had nothing to write about, save for the birth of two wolf pups earlier this week.

Then a sound reached his ear. People. He moved closer and was able to discern more sounds now, feelings, and scents. A fire, snapping against the wood, music and feet tapping rhythmically on the soft grass of a clearing, causing a slight tremor like a vibration that thrummed the earth. The scent of food hung heavily in the air and as he inhaled deeply, he could smell herbs and spices, the care of a mother or a wife. Children laughing and the low timbre of male voices had him nod in thought. A group of travelling performers then. The travelled in families and were probably having a resting day if the early evening was any hint to him.

He had encountered groups like this before. They were always more then interesting to travel with and he straightened from the minor slouch his body had assumed as he listened to the forest. He would join them. Groups like this were a wealth of information, both to his kind and to his person.

Walking into the clearing he was not surprised, yet oddly pleased to find that his assumption had been correct. Casting an eye on the gathered people, he did not fail to notice that some were merely guests here. That suited him fine. After all, he would be a guest as well and it would be good to know that they were accepted within this group. His eye landed on a few men standing nearby, tending to a wagon and he approached them with quiet feet.

"I beg your pardon, kind sir." He waited until he had caught the attention of at least one of the men and continued with the introduction his mother had always told him to give. "My name is Alexander and as a Peace Keeper, I ask for your permission to travel with your company and document your lives." He made a light bow and straightened himself once more to await the man's answer.

Caden slid his hands over the wagon wheel, feeling the grain of the wood against his hand. He didn't close his eyes in order to concentrate. He got over doing that when he was younger. It was easier for a person to sneak up on him that way. Instead he focused and everything around him shifted.

His senses widened and he became aware of everything. The scent of the earth and wood even the sweat on Marco's body wafted into his nostrils. He could taste the spices in the air and the wetness of the air that spoke of spring. The conversations around him became like music, dipping in and out. Colors were vibrant and shimmered around him, more real than the last. Yet it was touch that was more intense, because he could feel more than just the wheel under his hand, more than just the wood fibers. He could feel the shift of atoms and the potential, he could feel the life that laid even in the inanimate.

The wheel was cracked and the next bump would probably cause the wheel to break apart. All he needed to do was shift it. Change it into something more. He let the magic within him start to build. It only needed a small tug, because the wheel wanted to be whole. He started to give that tug, when the air shifted, pulling back to make room for another presence.

He paused and then a voice. Caden looked up at the man as something inside him set off a warning. Peace Keeper. Ah.

He dropped his hands and smiled at the man. He let the intense awareness fade away from him. It was painful to let it slip away as it always was, but he didn't let that show.

"Nice to meet you Alexander." Caden reached at his side and took a gulp from his flask, before grinning. " I'm Caden and you'll have to talk to the caravan owner. I don't think he'll mind you joining us, but he might have something to say about you documenting people's activities. " He nodded at the wagon. "He's at the front of the wagon. Give me a moment and I can show you."

He turned to Marco. "The Wheel's cracked. Just give me a bit and I'll fix her up. "

Marco grunted.

"So how is everyone this fine day, enjoying the fire?" Alexis asked, looking around the small ring of people around the campfire, there weren't many- the lovebirds, an old granny and the young girl with her cloak wrapped tight about her. He pushed a stray strand of hair up his forehead, still damp with sweat from his training exercise with Xander. "Anyone have any good stories to tell? …Not you Recklan, we've heard all your stories the last time you were drunk. "

The youth laughed, his sense of amusement obviously tickled, and pulled his girl closer, "Lies, all of them. Ask the new girl," He jerked his head towards the two, "Maybe she's got a story we haven't heard yet, " He smiled at her jovially, "we're always in search of a new tale."

Taern keenly observed the fine stitching on Shun's shirt while nodding his head in appraisal. The child's mother was a talented seamstress, possessing a sharp eye for detail, and he also noticed the work she'd done on Fugue's tunic as thanks.

"This is exquisite work," Taern voiced his fascination as he ran his fingertips across the design on Shun's chest. "You're very skilled with your hands," he offered in compliment to the woman and turned his head to face her just as she turned hers away and he wasn't sure but he could have sworn she had sent a coy glance his way. He could have been wrong and misinterpreted the look but Taern gave her a charming smile all the same.

He let Shun lead him towards the campfire and the Demon settled comfortably before pulling his new little friend into his lap, wrapping his arms protectively around his midriff and giving the boy a gentle squeeze.

"Will you be joining us as well, Fugue?" he asked, gesturing to the space beside them, his first impressions that the young man was completely irresponsible and not suited to watch children were now forgotten.

Only having been with the caravan for three small months, Fugue wasn’t accustomed to every subtle detail in the caravan members’ personalities yet, but he recognised Esmeralda’s glance. It made him chuckle and gently poke her side to tease. She let out a surprised, but laughing yelp. “What?” she giggled at the musen, “He is rather strong and handsome, isn’t he?”

Watching after Taern trailing Shun and finding a nice spot at the fire, Fugue couldn’t help but agreeing. Following after them, he grinned at Shun’s mother. “Best not come on too strong, Esmeralda. David might get jealous.” But Fugue had been around long enough to know that her husband wouldn’t be offended in the least.

Esmeralda affirmed it with a nod: “We have an open relationship.” But then she spotted another caravan member whose clothes she had fixed and moved to meet up with them. Fugue moved towards Shun and Taern at the fire. Taern invited him to sit and Fugue nodded. “I will, in a moment. You two stay here, I’ll get us something to eat.”

Light on his feet, Fugue slipped through the camp, greeting people here and there and exchanging small talk as he made his way to get his friends some dinner. He looked around for Xander, but didn’t see him. The Blade master was probably still busy with the horses. At one of the wagons on the outer circles of the camp, Fugue could spot Caden crouched in front of a wheel. There were a couple of men around him, one which the musen didn’t recognise. Another new face? It made him smile. The more, the merrier, Loclaren always said and with this many new faces things were bound to get a lot merrier! Maybe he could stir some of the musicians into song and dance after they had all eaten their fill. After all, it was a rest day, was it not? And what was more relaxing than losing yourself to the music and dance to your heart’s content?

He took a little longer than planned, his hands full with several bowls of porridge and stew for Shun and Taern. Small, sticky buns were wedged between his fingers and Fugue found his way back to the fire over the rough terrain without spilling. The fire next to theirs was close to unoccupied, just Alexis trying to start up a conversation, Nariko hiding herself away, Recklan and Laural and Granny Redleaf. He nodded a polite greeting when he passed them and went over to where the demon and the boy sat, offering them the bowls. “Enjoy! It smells delightful. I can only imagine it tasting just as good.” Though he would most definitely be skipping the stew.

As he was told to talk to the Caravan leader, Alexander stood patiently next to the wagon to wait for the man to fix the wheel. Casting an eye around the campsite, he was intrigued to find this many different sould in one spot. Dream Walker, musen, Blade Master and surely many others all gathered around a camp fire. Pushing up his glasses with his free hand, he deftly hid a grin behind it.

Only minutes ago he had arrived and already this place seemed to be more interesting then any other he had visited in many years. They would prove to be a more captivating crowd for his tales and he could not wait to begin, fingers itching for a pen to hold and a black piece of paper to stain with his words.

He refrained though, and pushed his excitement away to one of the far corners in his mind where it belonged. After all, a Peace Keeper does not get excited. Lowering his hand to his side again, he raised his head with a neutral expression once more.

He dearly hoped that no one would object to his wrtitings. Truthfully, many people thought it an honor that a Peace Keeper wished to document them and as everything they wrote was only read by the head librarian, it was not as if it wasn't private. Even if he would write about the life of a murderer and he was the only one in the world to know of the mans true identity, it would remain as such. For if he did not, he would meddle in history. A Peace Keepers greatest sin.

Caden's hands fluttered up and down from the wheel. He wanted to fix it, but he could feel the heavy presence of the Peacekeeper. It would bring up questions and the Phlinxs have spent their lives avoiding them. He heard even the Elders have done the same. He sighed softly. It looked like he would have to leave the caravan sooner than he planned. He smiled. It was better this way.

He straightened up. "Ah, I shouldn't have such a distinguish guest wait. The wheel can wait until I show you to the owner." He beckoned Alexander to follow him. "This way."

He started walking to the front of the wagon and then pointed to a man. "That's him. He'll answer all your questions. Good luck." Caden started to pat Alexander's shoulder, but pulled his hand away at the last moment, turning it into a wave instead, before turning back around to leave.

Did I hear the dulcet tones of a new traveler?” Alaistar Loclaran’s warm, rich baritone asked absently as he looked up from where Caden’s finger so helpfully pointed. “Thank-you Caden.” He had paused where he sat for a moment, a set of pipe’s halfway to his lips as Caden turned away, leaving the stranger behind. His silver eyes twinkled as he beheld the man Caden had guided over, wetting his lips and nodding in greeting. He brought the set closer to his lips and carefully played the last 10 note trill he’d been working on with the boy the last few days.

When he’d finished, Alaistar ruffled the tousled head of the lad he’d been teaching and sent him off with one last murmured word and a small wooden beginner’s pipe. He turned his attention fully to Alexander, his lean figure bowing lightly on his feet and grinning in welcome as he tucked his set of panpipes in his belt. The soft fabric scarf covering his bald head whispered as he pushed it out of his way, head cocking as he regarded the newcomer and jumped down from the front of the wagon.

“I am called Loclaran, of the Loclaran Troupe of Performance Entertainers Extraordinaire.” He raised an arm and gestured towards the group of people with a smile. His careful silver eyes immediately took in the sudden new addition at the cook fires as well since he’d been teaching the young man. “This is my Troupe good sire, do you have business you’d like to engage in?”
